The breed
Kankrej in a commercial sourcing context
Kankrej is a dual-purpose indigenous breed associated with the arid and semi-arid districts of North Gujarat, Banaskantha, Kutch and adjoining Rajasthan. It is known for hardiness under heat stress and for maintaining condition on sparse grazing.
For a bulk buyer, the practical consequence is a supply pool that behaves differently across the year to a Gir pool. We plan Kankrej programmes with that seasonality written into the volume band rather than discovered mid-contract.
Supply programme
How bulk Kankrej cow milk is supplied
Gujarat sourcing
Collection through centres in the Kankrej belt, with contributing herds recorded at the point of collection.
Bulk supply
Commercial daily volumes with an agreed flex band, despatched by insulated road tanker.
Testing
Compositional, keeping-quality and adulteration testing on every batch before release.
B2B buyers
Supplied to dairy brands, processors, private-label businesses and institutional buyers only.
Specification
Contracting a Kankrej programme
Breed preference is recorded as part of the supply specification, alongside compositional bands and the A2:A1 procurement basis where the buyer requires one.
Where an A2:A1 basis is contracted, verification follows the same methodology used across our sourcing pools: we use RT-PCR to check A1/A2 in the animals in the allocated pool, kept distinct from protein-level analysis of the milk itself. Buyers running mixed programmes can specify separate Gir and Kankrej lots rather than a blended pool.
